PARIS – January 24, 2024 – Avient Corporation, a leading provider of specialized and sustainable material solutions and services, today announced it is highlighting its portfolio of bio-based polymer solutions at Pharmapack 2024, Europe’s leading trade show for the pharma packaging and drug delivery device industry. These solutions include bio-based polymer colorants and additives, and bio-derived thermoplastic elastomers with lower product carbon footprint (PCF) values substantiated by Avient’s PCF Calculator certified by TÜV Rheinland for ISO 14067 compliance.

Bio-based Polymer Colorants and Additives

Launched in 2021, Mevopur™ Healthcare Bio-based Polymer Solutions are color and additive concentrates and ready-to-use formulations manufactured with bio-based polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or styrenic polymers.

With a bio-based polymer content ranging from 70% to 100%, these concentrates can provide reduced carbon footprints compared to fossil fuel-based Mevopur concentrates with typical PCF reductions of 70% and up to 120% – calculated with Avient’s third-party certified PCF Calculator. The data sheet of each Mevopur bio-based concentrate will include the percentage of bio-based content and the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) value to help healthcare product manufacturers calculate a product's environmental impact.

Mevopur Healthcare Bio-based Polymer Solutions are drop-in solutions that can be used the same way as conventional concentrates in the injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion of medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging. Like other Mevopur products, they are formulated with raw materials tested to ISO 10993-1 and USP <87> <88>, European Pharmacopeia 3.1.3 and 3.1.5, USP <661.1> and ICH Q3D.

Bio-based Thermoplastic Elastomers

Another bio-based solution that can help healthcare manufacturers decrease the carbon footprint of their products is the recently launched Versaflex™ HC BIO thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). Specially developed for biopharmaceutical tubing, it contains nearly 40% first-generation biomass content and shows a PCF reduction of nearly 25% compared to standard Versaflex HC BT218 grades – calculated with Avient’s third-party certified PCF calculator.

The bio-derived TPE formulations provide critical performance features comparable to standard TPEs and silicone, such as weldability, kink resistance, 71 Shore A hardness, and tensile strength.

Certified for USP Class VI and ISO 10993, the new Versaflex HC BIO BT218 grade is commercially available globally. Currently manufactured in the United States, Avient is actively working to bring production to Europe.

Other Specialized Materials Highlighted at Pharmapack 2024:

  • Mevopur™ Healthcare Colorants and Formulations: color concentrates and ready-to-use formulations to add color and enhance the performance of medical plastics, developed with raw materials pre-tested to ISO, USP, EP, and ICH Q3D protocols
  • Remafin™ EP White Colorants: white concentrates pre-tested to European Pharmacopeia standards for use with polyethylene and polypropylene pharmaceutical packaging
  • Versaflex™ HC Thermoplastic Elastomers series HC3810: translucent TPE formulations offering excellent colorability for injection molded parts and over-molding, developed to comply with ISO 10993-4 and -5, REACH SVHC, and RoHS
  • Trilliant™ HC Healthcare Thermoplastics: customizable polymer formulations offering excellent resistance to common disinfectants and high temperatures; the portfolio also includes electrically conductive formulations for automated pipette systems

Avient is exhibiting at Pharmapack in Hall 7.2, booth C91, at the Paris Expo in Porte de Versailles, France, January 24-25, 2024.
